“O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa (God-consciousness).”
– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
Sawm, or fasting, is observed during the blessed month of Ramadan. From dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, marital relations, and sinful behavior — focusing instead on prayer, reflection, and acts of charity.
Fasting develops patience, self-control, and empathy for the less fortunate. It is a spiritual detox, training the soul to resist temptation and turn toward Allah.
The fast is broken daily with Iftar, and the month ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a day of joy, community, and gratitude.
